The 2025 Geology Optional papers followed the standard UPSC structure of two papers (Paper I and II), each divided into Section A and B, with Q1 and Q5 compulsory. Students had to attempt five questions in total (250 marks), ensuring balance between both sections.

Our analysis of the papers, mapped carefully against the official UPSC syllabus, highlights the following key takeaways for future aspirants:

Balanced Coverage Across the Syllabus

Questions spanned all major areas of the syllabus, ensuring no subject could be safely ignored.

Both fundamental topics (e.g., Continental Drift, GPS, Microfossils, Petrology phase diagrams) and applied/Indian geology (e.g., Delhi Supergroup, Spiti Basin, Pb–Zn deposits, KG Basin) featured prominently.

Weightage by Subject

When regrouped into the 12 official syllabus categories, the weightage was broadly uniform: most major subjects carried ~60–70 marks each.

This reflects UPSC’s design choice of ensuring balanced representation, rather than concentrating marks heavily in only a few areas.

Future candidates should therefore treat all subjects as equally important from a marks perspective, with no area being “low priority.”

Difficulty Profile

Marks-weighted difficulty averaged ~1.5 on a 1–3 scale (1 = easy, 2 = medium, 3 = hard).

Paper I leaned slightly tougher (~1.54) than Paper II (~1.39), largely due to Structural and Engineering Geology questions.

Overall, a well-prepared student could expect a moderate paper with a few tricky concepts (e.g., sheath folds, reserve estimation, thrust geometries).

Attempt Strategy Matters

Because only five questions out of eight are attempted, students can strategically avoid the toughest questions.

Future candidates should therefore prepare across the syllabus but practice identifying safer scoring questions quickly under exam conditions.

Overall Message to Students

The 2025 paper reinforced UPSC’s approach of testing breadth + depth: rewarding both conceptual clarity (easy factual questions) and analytical skills (applied/interpretive questions).

Success lies in:

Covering all grouped syllabus areas,

Practicing diagram-based answers (structural geology, petrology, geomorphology), and

Developing choice-making skills to maximize scoring by avoiding the hardest options.

IIT Bombay announces GATE 2021 exam schedule. Some major developments seen in the examination pattern

In its press release, IIT Bombay announced the examination schedule for 2021. This is the first time in many years that students will see some major changes in the examination. Find full details on https://gate.iitb.ac.in/.

For the start, IIT Bombay has updated the eligibility criteria for the GATE examination: ‘a candidate who is currently studying in 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts‘ is eligible to appear in the examination.

The candidate can now opt for up to two subject papers (from a prescribed set of combinations) that the exam calendar would permit. This has been done to boost the opportunity to study in inter-disciplinary areas.

In addition, two more subjects have been added, including : ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences), making the total number of subject papers to 27.

The dates of the examination have been spread out over a longer duration as 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th and 14th of February 2021. In the previous years GATE examination was conducted on Saturdays and Sundays. In this year there will be examination sessions even on Fridays.

Additions of Humanities courses to the GATE examination may prove to be a boost to the humanities students. Since many PSUs require HR, finance and other support staff from humanities disciplines, some of the PSUs may decide to hire employees through the GATE route. Therefore, it is highly recommended that Humanities Students should also appear in 2021 GATE examination. Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay, said, “I am particularly delighted at the creation of much needed new career opportunities for those in the Humanities and Social Sciences area as this may serve as one single standardized criterion for admission to various masters and doctoral programs in various IITs and other universities in India. Should any agency, for example, various PSUs want to hire candidates with Humanities background, this new exam paper in GATE will prove to be a great enabler!”

For geology students it would be interesting to watch which combination of papers would they be allowed to appear in.

What optional should I choose for the UPSC examination? This is the dilemma that every UPSC aspirant faces. The simple decision about what optional to chose can have very significant impact on you UPSC result. There are some optional subjects which are highly scoring and some which are not so much. Geology is one of the optional subjects offered by the UPSC in the mains examination.

Read Avinash’s story about how he cracked IFoS examination with geology as optional.
-Avinash kumar (ifs)

Geology is not so famous as an optional as, say for example geography, history or public administration. The main reasons for the low number of aspirants choosing geology as an optional are:

It is a very specialised subject

There are no institutes offering quality education in geosciences.

It is very hard of find good quality study material

The total number of students graduating is geology in India is a lot less compared to other disciplines. Since many students choose to opt the same subject in which they graduated as optional, there are fewer geology optional aspirants as there are less graduates.

However, there are several advantages of taking geology as an optional:

The biggest advantage of taking geology as an optional is that it is offered as an optional subject in the Indian Forest Services (IFoS) examination as well and several state services examinations such as Assistant Conservator of Forest jobs in Himachal Pradesh. Subjects such as History, Geography, Public Administration and other arts subjects are not offered in forest services examinations.

Geology is a high scoring subject. It is easy to score over 300 with minimal preparation.

Competition is in Geology is significantly less compared to other subjects.

It is very easy for Geography optional students to transition to geology as there is a significant overlap between the two subjects, especially between Physical Geography and Geomorphology.

The issue of lack of coaching institutes and study material will be addressed in the future as some coaching institutes (such as Planet Geology) are starting to offer high quality education to geology optional aspirants.

Read Avinash’s story about how he cracked IFoS examination with geology as optional.
